Upcycled Bread Salad May 31, 2012

I don’t want to start a new category so I thought “My Craft” will just be fine for this.

I can say I don’t cook. I am one of the lucky ones who married someone who can cook well and enjoys it more than I do. But very occasionally I spend some time creating in the kitchen too. There are times I get an urge to have something I know can do well and love to eat it too. So this is what I made today; on a lovely early summer day: Bread salad! An upcycled food I love!

To start of , you need a wee bit stale bread. I can say we have that a lot here. I am linking one of the recipes here on this salad. http://www.care2.com/greenliving/tomato-bread-salad.html I don’t follow recipes well; I always  make changes. I guess that applies to other areas of my life too 🙂

Enjoy!

This time what I changed was, that also put garlic into the sauce. and cut up cucumbers to make it more colourful. I don’t understand the cup measurements (living in Europe)  at all so don’t even bother with it; I just taste here and there. Also left the seeds in it too.

Advise: squeezing tomatoes are not so tricky; all you need to do while you squeeze, cover the bowl with 2 pieces of papertowel. Clean job!

Baby Mobile May 25, 2012

Now I am getting ready on many levels to have our next baby. One is the nesting. Though I have no hormone level changes to back me up on this, but already have the urge to make nice things for the baby’s new home. I am making a nice mobile from felt. While I’m working on it I can already feel connecting with this new little person. I know nothing about her yet, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem.

the circles before sewing

It is another easy, but a bit time-consuming craft.

Cut out many same size but different colour circles.

Cut out smaller circles or other shapes if you wish in different colours .

Sew the small circles on top of the bigger ones

Sew the two same colour same size big circles together. Before finishing it leave a tiny hole to fill it with soft stuffing to give it a nice body.

Thread them on string/thin ribbon and hang.

Expecting

The Hungarian word for this actually would translate: waiting; waiting for a baby. Well we are expecting, waiting for this baby to arrive to us since 2006. That is when we signed up for adoption.

Few months before our wedding we’ve found out I suffer from a lifelong autoimmune disorder; which is life threatening but can be controlled and has to be controlled for the rest of my life. Antiphospholipid syndrome. One of it’s symptoms is miscarriage. So knowing that even with treatment it will not be an easy task to have a baby we came up with plan B. (I always like to have plan B, sometimes plan C too.) The waiting list was long; but we did not mind; as we were still trying to have a baby ourselves. After 4 unsuccessful pregnancies on treatment I took everything into my hands. Changed doctors, after doing long research made my own medical plan for the next pregnancy; took some great doctors on board and got fantastic help from an online support group. And we fell pregnant again; and had our baby girl in early 2010. (Well it wasn’t that easy; difficult pregnancy on many levels, not an easy birth and hard recovery with later complications)  The exact year we were suppose to have our adopted baby.

So in the last nearly 2 and half years now we are having this fantastic little person in our home; who is everything we had imagined would be and even more. OK; we could do more sleep; but apart from that she is the BEST!

In the meanwhile our adoption papers were put on hold; as the first child has to be 2 years of age before we can adopt. And we moved house; so more paper work had to be done. But as of yesterday we are back on the waiting list as the first couple again.

I feel it will happen before the summer is over. We don’t know ahead of time; only when there is a baby in the hospital already. So there is no getting ready time at all. We’ll get a phone call and few days later we have  baby at home.

So I have been preparing myself for this tiny thing to come into our home in the last few weeks. And I feel I am ready mentally and emotionally for her arrival. Our daughter, Roisin also is getting excited about a new baby, so I hope it will happen before she looses interest about the whole thing.

This is such a weird way of expecting. Not sure I can be ready like this for  a long time. There will be times when my interest will drop a bit and will get back up again. I guess.

How I prepare ?

I make things for the baby; such as a baby mobile and a summer blanket.

I also washed the newborn clothes and packed them away nicely in a box.

freshly washed newborn clothes

I made a list of things we need to do when we get the call.

I ordered online basic baby stuff. Most of the things we have from Roisin though.

I go and spend time in baby shops looking at things to get into the mood.

My lovely friends have organized a baby shower too! Which was strange, as half of them are actually pregnant themselves. But you’ll never know; I may beat them with an early phone call next week :). They got us a beautiful cradle; which is beside our bed already. Now I will sew padded lining for it with a drape. Can’t wait to get started.

…..and I am listening out for the phone to ring 🙂

The perfect evening with my daughter May 18, 2012

Filed under: Toddler — happystruggles @ 9:20 am

It is not an everyday thing; so don’t need to be jealous, we have  toddler-struggles in this household too. But yesterday evening for who knows what reason, everything was PERFECT.

After finally leaving the playground we had to go to the supermarket which is  a pain in the neck after 6pm, as there are long queues at the check out. R sat in her buggy and chose a book to “read” very patiently, which was not for buying just borrowing while in line. This is our rule in every shop; that she can have anything but have to leave it behind at the cashier. Which we remind her of every few minutes. She was very much into this colouring book; when I had to take it away from her. And she looked a bit disappointed but made no comments. She is so good at this now. So we went home with the shopping.

When we arrived home she helped me put things away and went to play with her trains. All happy and independent! I put on a wash, got her dinner ready; and she was playing so nicely with Thomas and the tracks.

We had a great time having dinner; we chatted, played the game of what is  this sign. (I am bringing back more and more of the sign language we used with her before she could talk, so she will be using it again with her wee sister)

After dinner she helped me upload the dishwasher, and I she is the one now to turn it on . It is a build in one; so she cannot get the buttons unless I open it and pull the door down; otherwise that would turn into a nightmare and probably a new purchase of dishwasher. On this note: It is always so important to think ahead of time when you teach anything new to your toddler, and figure, if she can turn this knowledge into something bad or even dangerous. It is a lot of thinking!

So as Daddy was coming home late; we went on to water the plants outside on our balcony. We did it twice! We checked all the tiny tomatoes and oranges too. They are doing just fine.

And there was even more fun coming. If you have not played hide and seek with a two years old; DO IT! It is so much fun! I was shaking with laughter all the way through it. So I hid first just behind the drawer unit. (We play the game only in one room to make it easier. )Finally she found me; big giggles, laughs and hugs!!! Then she hid;. at the same spot; of course. 🙂 I hid to different places but every time she went for the first spot to check, and I could see her little surprised face not to find me there. I just wanted to eat her up, but I did not move. I was keep calling out while she was looking for me. She was checking even under the bedcover; while I was just 2 feet away behind her; she turned around and look above me but not at me. SOOO cute! I was keep calling out, and she was just so confused! I had to move and show myself, I could not do it any longer I had to have her in my arms!My wee little funny angel! Needles to say every time it was her turn she hid in the very same first spot. 🙂

So we had to do more house work and hang out all the wet clothes. She loves that. Always did, even before she could walk, she helped me with this chore. She was on socks duty. She hung all of them on the bottom lines of the clothes horse; and also wanted to pair them. She did an excellent job!

Then we had one more thing to do before Daddy arrived and was time for bath; Clean Up! No problem at all. We sang the song and tidy everything in no time.

Three hours of absolute pleasure spent with my daughter. Hopefully there are many more on the way….

Accidentally alike May 15, 2012

I do like to dress my girl! I always think about that she should wear nice things that go well together… the usual stuff. I am sure it won’t be always like this, for many reasons. One:  she’ll want to choose her own clothes, (already started); two: I won’t have the time to think, juts the grab the closest thing, as soon as our new baby is here.  Well, I already do this for myself. 😦

I have made some observation about moms and daughters (sons too) dressing. Many times they are wearing things alike. I always though it is  a bit odd; until I figured this is usually not on purpose.  I choose clothes for my mood ; now not just for me but for R too. So few days ago we accidentally ended up  like this. R was wearing this cute dress for an hour before I had a chance to shower and get dressed.

And I was  shocked when we crossed paths in the living room.  D just had to take a photo.

For years I used to hold Messy Art classes for toddlers. That is before Roisin. I promised myself I will do the same for my daughter and her friends later. So here is one lovely project! (I stole the idea from a friend of mine.)

I was very pleased how it actually turned out.

Get a piece of cardboard, cut out a shape of a face. Let your kids paint it. We did both side. Give many things to glue on. They just love that part! I made the eyes to put on. As we had two sides done; I have decided to have a day and a night face; which we hang on R’s door-frame and switching it in relation to sleep and awake. Not that it helps with her sleep routine these days 😦

Wednesdays

Filed under: Toddler — happystruggles @ 1:47 pm

Wednesdays are “Roisin and Mami “days. We go to a lovely Hungarian singing-moving class at 9am. We both love it a lot. Nice parents, nice kids and most of all the lovely Gloria who sings beautifully and play many instruments. She is an excellent teacher. I hope other moms in MY class feel the same way about me. We do some chores in the morning, have lunch together and then…..comes the struggle for sleeping. Nowadays it takes up to 1-2 hours to put her down for her nap. She comes up with the best excuses to skip the nap; but you can tell she is exhausted.  But I know this will pass too….. I guess better now then later with the newborn in hand.
